In the Centers for Disease and Control & Prevention's latest Travel Health Notice (THN), Australia and New Zealand maintains their spot in the list of "Level 1: COVID-19 Low" countries, attesting to their success and competence in both managing and preventing COVID infections. While Australia and New Zealand have still yet to open their national borders, this THN should set your mind at ease as potential international students in these countries. A Level 1 THN stipulates that all travelers the countries in that list should wear a mask, avoid crowds, stay at least 6 feet from people who are not traveling with you, wash your hands often or use hand sanitizer, and watch your health for signs of illness. According to the CDC, the primary criteria for a Level 1 classification for a country is if it is measured to have low incidence rate (cumulative cases over the past 28 days per 100,000 population) and stable new cases trajectory (have new cases increased, decreased, or remained stable over the past 28 days). Meanwhile, a Level 2 suggests "Moderate Risk" where travelers at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19 should avoid all nonessential travel; Level 3 is "COVID-19 High" where travel should avoid all nonessential travel; and lastly, Level 4 where it is marked as a "COVID-19 Very High" travel health notice.
